This is my friend TJ, wearing a costume she made for Halloween, 1977. She was 16 at the time.
Now, keep in mind: there was no internet to search for images. She could not have rented and paused the movie, because it wasn’t released on video until 1982. No, TJ just went to the movie a bunch of times, took notes with a flashlight, drew a bunch of sketches, and put this together.

I’ve read a lot of books in my day, but Abarat is probably the first book series that I’ve really, obnoxiously nerded out over. To like Harry Potter fan levels. If merchandise existed I’d probably own everything and I’d wind up on a buzzfeed video about “this ultimate fan who owns every single Abarat action figure what is her problem.” If there was an actual midnight opening for the upcoming book I’d probably be first in line. If Hot Topic sold Abarat t-shirts I would wear them.
Fortunately none of that exists so I can maintain some level of sanity.

Been a while, but here’s another bootleg sailor scout: Beauty Girl!
A kind hearted high school girl was chosen by an old magic compact to inherit it’s power to make anything the user wants. However she has to protect it from those who want to use it for evil. The only problem is that Beauty Girl’s sparkling aura is hard to keep hidden.
Not gonna lie, I mostly picked this one because I thought the color scheme was interesting. There were a few different ones, but I couldn’t pass up pink hair.
Young Beauty Flower Angel: A squad of 5 middle school girls chosen to gather lost/endangered plants that are considered treasures to an Earth Goddess. Their reward for adventuring the world to find them is to get their wishes granted, but also are endowed with powers to help them out of situations & fight evil that stands in their way (think Captain Planet but with magical girls)
This bootleg set is actually one of my favorites, because unlike a lot of them they seem to have a bit more effort put into them, like the all have a set identity & weapon. So instead of revamping the whole thing I just refined it a little. It was a lot of fun!
With the help of some alien/magic roller skates, she can skate around to any place in the world at lightning speeds. (She can adjust the speed with her wristwatch).
The original doll was kinda “meh” but I liked the idea of tennis shoes on a sailor senshi (apparently its not even from the doll but just some shoes the op of this photo had laying around) so I tried to make them vital to the design haha.
Member of an galaxy famous idol unit, when the planet she & her friends were performing on suddenly got destroyed! Now she has to go across the galaxy to collect fragments of her homeworld and hopefully find the rest of her group! One of the fragments she already has can let her manipulate matter & use it to defend against the mysterious evil organization trying to stop her
As you can see I kinda took a lot of liberties with the original design, but it was just so boring. As I’m working my way through these It’s becoming more fun to deviate further from the Sailor Fuku idea and make it it’s own thing (while still trying to keep the original concept in mind)
So I’m gonna try and do some renditions of some of these Sailor Moon bootleg toys – because someone, somewhere played with these & it was their favorite toy ever. also just because I think bootleg toy characters are kind of fascinating.
But anyway, here’s Moonbeam Traveler!
A young girl discovers a mysterious stone while hiking in the woods, with it’s power she can teleport anywhere in the world, but only while it’s nighttime. With the stone she can also transform & be granted powers to help defend it from forces that want to use it for evil.
Since the dolls are all the same except for color scheme, I imagine each one being like a power up? or a different ability? (like the blue is default, green is extra strength & the purple one is extra speed? something like that) But yeah, expect more of these
